STATE-SPECIFIC CHECKS

Before choosing a parcel

  1. Open the parcel in DECinfo Locator and follow its property page to verify the manager, entrances, boundaries, and any local rules before navigating to it.
  2. Check for a separate access permit or reservation on New York City watershed lands, Long Island properties, cooperative areas, parks, and other specially managed locations.
  3. Do not treat a road, utility corridor, or right-of-way as permission to reach adjoining land; confirm the full access route and private-land permission with the owner or manager.

Official links reviewed August 14, 2026. Agencies control current maps, seasons, permits, closures, and legal requirements; recheck them before every hunt.

WRITTEN PERMISSION

No general written-only rule identified; writing is recommended or accepted in the modeled scope

New York DEC states that hunters may not enter private property, posted or unposted, without permission and must obtain permission before pursuing wounded game across a boundary. Verbal agreements are common, but DEC recommends writing because written owner permission bars a trespass prosecution. Owner permission is separately required to discharge a firearm while hunting within 500 feet of a dwelling or other occupied structure, subject to the directional waterfowl exception.

New York access questions

Can I request dates for New York land today?

If a reviewed listing appears on this page, open it to send the owner a no-charge date request. If the reviewed rail reports zero, create a private request instead. Neither action grants access; the owner must approve the exact dates, party size, rules, and property terms.

Does a pass include my licenses or tags?

No. Private-property access is separate from licenses, permits, tags, draws, seasons, legal methods, and other requirements. Verify all current rules with the state wildlife agency.

Can I list land anywhere in New York?

Yes. Landowners can submit a free, non-binding interest form from any county or area in the state.

Are hunting results guaranteed?

No. Back40 Pass can define access and property terms, but wildlife presence, harvest, weather, and hunting success can never be guaranteed.
