Find the official New York property record before asking to hunt.

New York's Statewide Parcel Map Program provides an assessment look-up tool, public parcel data where counties permit redistribution, and a current county-by-county resource table. Public standardized polygon coverage is not complete statewide.

A parcel, tax, or deed record is not permission to enter the land or proof that one named person controls every hunting right.

The New York path

Use the record for orientation—not authorization.

Start with the state parcel page and its county resource table. Use the state look-up or public map where available, but follow the county link for current local information and confirm the recorded owner before requesting permission.

What you can verify

Map lookupParcel-ID searchOfficial office contact
Administration
Mixed state and local
Record authority
County real-property departments own and maintain source GIS parcel data; local assessors and county clerks hold the current assessment and recorded-instrument records.
Owner-name access
Owner-name availability varies by county, municipality, or portal.
Freshness
The standardized parcel products update yearly, and the county resource table was revised in May 2026. County systems can be newer and control their own access rules.

What still needs checking

Only 38 counties currently permit inclusion in the public standardized parcel download. The state says GIS parcels are for planning and general use, not legal surveys, title proof, or permission.

Official-use restriction: Honor county access restrictions and do not republish owner or address data; use records only for a direct permission request.

A current owner, co-owner, tenant, property manager, trust representative, or hunting-rights lessee may be the relevant decision-maker. Ask directly and do not treat silence, a map label, or a prior invitation as approval.

From record to respectful request

Do not turn public records into mass outreach.

Research one relevant property, use a lawful and respectful channel, explain the narrow hunt you want to discuss, and make “no” easy.

1. Recheck the property and county

Confirm that the record belongs to the parcel you meant to research and reopen the live source near the time of contact. Do not navigate by generalized tax-map lines in the field.

2. Ask who controls hunting access

A name or tax-mailing record can begin the inquiry; it cannot settle co-ownership, occupancy, management, an existing lease, or a separate transfer of hunting rights.

3. Define the exact request

Name the hunters, species, lawful method, dates, scouting, equipment, parking, entry, boundaries, guests, and retrieval plan. Do not enter first and ask later.

4. Use the official written record

Requirements vary. Open the New York written-permission requirements, then confirm every current state, local, and property-specific rule and form.
