Landowner hunting-access programs in Colorado.

Colorado verifies the selective Ranching for Wildlife and Bighorn Sheep Access partnerships with current owner eligibility and program rules. Walk-In Access remains hunter-facing without a current program-responsible owner intake source and is not modeled here.

Official terms and funding can change. Confirm eligibility, current enrollment status, agreement language, and the enrolled access boundary with the responsible agency.

Payment disclosure
No payment stated: CPW's current public overview describes license allocations and the wildlife-management partnership, not a cash owner payment.
Minimum acreage
CPW's official Ranching for Wildlife rule requires at least 10,000 acres of privately owned land in one contiguous unit.

Who may qualify: A qualifying ranch must meet the 10,000-acre rule and enter a CPW wildlife-management partnership that supplies free public hunting to residents who draw the ranch-specific licenses and requires habitat work.

Owner control: Hunt seasons, public and private license allocations, ranch access, and habitat commitments are established through the approved ranch plan and CPW program rules rather than an owner-run booking marketplace.

Official next step: Contact CPW for current Ranching for Wildlife proposal and management-plan requirements.

Colorado Bighorn Sheep Access Program

Drawn access
Signs or mappingHunter managementLicense or permit benefit
Payment disclosure
No payment stated: The official program rule allocates public and private bighorn sheep licenses but does not state a cash landowner payment.
Minimum acreage
Participating properties must include at least 5,000 acres of privately owned land.
Enrollment
Seasonal enrollment · New or renewed contracts must be signed by the CPW director by October 15 to participate the following year.

Who may qualify: A property must meet the 5,000-acre threshold, support a predictably present sustainable Rocky Mountain bighorn herd, stay within one herd unit, and satisfy the rule's private- or State-Trust-land herd-use test.

Owner control: CPW and the owner establish ranch access through a cooperative agreement. Public and private access must generally be equivalent, the owner supplies the public hunter's property packet, and the ranch may not charge the public hunter an access fee.

Official next step: Contact CPW to evaluate the herd and prepare a Bighorn Sheep Access cooperative agreement.
