Find the official West Virginia property record before asking to hunt.

The WV Property Viewer searches and maps surface-property assessment information for all 55 counties by address, owner name, or parcel identifier.

A parcel, tax, or deed record is not permission to enter the land or proof that one named person controls every hunting right.

The West Virginia path

Use the record for orientation—not authorization.

Search the viewer by location or parcel ID, use any owner result only as a lead, and confirm errors or recent changes with the county assessor. Verify who can grant access and obtain explicit permission before entering.

What you can verify

Map lookupAddress searchOwner-name searchParcel-ID search
Administration
Mixed state and local
Record authority
County assessors maintain the source parcel and assessment information; the West Virginia Property Tax Division and WV GIS Technical Center publish the statewide viewer.
Owner-name access
The reviewed official path displays an owner-name field.
Freshness
The viewer says property-record information is released annually from the Property Tax Division, so recent ownership changes can lag; parcel geometry also depends on county submissions.

What still needs checking

The viewer covers surface tax parcels, not all mineral interests, and its lines are not survey-grade or conclusive proof of ownership. Results do not establish legal access or hunting permission.

Official-use restriction: Use public owner information only for a legitimate, limited permission request. Do not bulk-copy, republish, or use contact information to harass a property owner.

A current owner, co-owner, tenant, property manager, trust representative, or hunting-rights lessee may be the relevant decision-maker. Ask directly and do not treat silence, a map label, or a prior invitation as approval.

From record to respectful request

Do not turn public records into mass outreach.

Research one relevant property, use a lawful and respectful channel, explain the narrow hunt you want to discuss, and make “no” easy.

1. Recheck the property and county

Confirm that the record belongs to the parcel you meant to research and reopen the live source near the time of contact. Do not navigate by generalized tax-map lines in the field.

2. Ask who controls hunting access

A name or tax-mailing record can begin the inquiry; it cannot settle co-ownership, occupancy, management, an existing lease, or a separate transfer of hunting rights.

3. Define the exact request

Name the hunters, species, lawful method, dates, scouting, equipment, parking, entry, boundaries, guests, and retrieval plan. Do not enter first and ask later.

4. Use the official written record

Requirements vary. Open the West Virginia written-permission requirements, then confirm every current state, local, and property-specific rule and form.
