Find the official Virginia property record before asking to hunt.

Virginia real-estate assessment and land records are administered through counties and independent cities. Virginia.gov locates the responsible local government, while the court system routes users to participating Circuit Court land-record indexes.

A parcel, tax, or deed record is not permission to enter the land or proof that one named person controls every hunting right.

The Virginia path

Use the record for orientation—not authorization.

Use Virginia.gov to identify the county or independent city and its assessment office. If needed, use the court land-record service or contact the Circuit Court Clerk to verify a recent deed, then request explicit permission from an authorized person.

What you can verify

Official office contact
Administration
Mixed state and local
Record authority
The county or city assessment office maintains local assessment records, and the Circuit Court Clerk records deeds and other land records for that jurisdiction.
Owner-name access
The reviewed official path restricts owner-name access or search.
Freshness
Local assessment sites and Circuit Court indexes update on jurisdiction-specific schedules. Check the record date and confirm recent transfers with the responsible local office.

What still needs checking

Local assessments and index hits are leads, not proof of current title, surveyed boundaries, access, or hunting permission. Remote deed-image access, free index access, fees, and coverage vary by Circuit Court Clerk.

Official-use restriction: Do not attempt to bypass court access controls or local privacy protections. Use lawfully available information only for a limited, respectful permission inquiry.

A current owner, co-owner, tenant, property manager, trust representative, or hunting-rights lessee may be the relevant decision-maker. Ask directly and do not treat silence, a map label, or a prior invitation as approval.

From record to respectful request

Do not turn public records into mass outreach.

Research one relevant property, use a lawful and respectful channel, explain the narrow hunt you want to discuss, and make “no” easy.

1. Recheck the property and county

Confirm that the record belongs to the parcel you meant to research and reopen the live source near the time of contact. Do not navigate by generalized tax-map lines in the field.

2. Ask who controls hunting access

A name or tax-mailing record can begin the inquiry; it cannot settle co-ownership, occupancy, management, an existing lease, or a separate transfer of hunting rights.

3. Define the exact request

Name the hunters, species, lawful method, dates, scouting, equipment, parking, entry, boundaries, guests, and retrieval plan. Do not enter first and ask later.

4. Use the official written record

Requirements vary. Open the Virginia written-permission requirements, then confirm every current state, local, and property-specific rule and form.
