Find the official California property record before asking to hunt.

California's Board of Equalization lists the assessor and other property-tax officials for all 58 counties; parcel tools remain county-run.

A parcel, tax, or deed record is not permission to enter the land or proof that one named person controls every hunting right.

The California path

Use the record for orientation—not authorization.

Select the parcel's county, contact its assessor or follow the county website to its official parcel lookup, and use the assessor parcel number to verify the lead locally.

What you can verify

Official office contact
Administration
County based
Record authority
The county assessor identifies ownership for assessment, while recorded deeds and title research remain separate county recorder functions.
Owner-name access
An owner-name search was not verified from the official source.
Freshness
The state contact list is current at review, but each county controls its record refresh and online-tool availability.

What still needs checking

Assessment ownership can lag recording and is not conclusive title evidence. County GIS lines are not surveys and neither a record nor map establishes hunting-right authority, access, or permission.

A current owner, co-owner, tenant, property manager, trust representative, or hunting-rights lessee may be the relevant decision-maker. Ask directly and do not treat silence, a map label, or a prior invitation as approval.

From record to respectful request

Do not turn public records into mass outreach.

Research one relevant property, use a lawful and respectful channel, explain the narrow hunt you want to discuss, and make “no” easy.

1. Recheck the property and county

Confirm that the record belongs to the parcel you meant to research and reopen the live source near the time of contact. Do not navigate by generalized tax-map lines in the field.

2. Ask who controls hunting access

A name or tax-mailing record can begin the inquiry; it cannot settle co-ownership, occupancy, management, an existing lease, or a separate transfer of hunting rights.

3. Define the exact request

Name the hunters, species, lawful method, dates, scouting, equipment, parking, entry, boundaries, guests, and retrieval plan. Do not enter first and ask later.

4. Use the official written record

Requirements vary. Open the California written-permission requirements, then confirm every current state, local, and property-specific rule and form.
