Where to hunt in Maine

STATE-SPECIFIC CHECKS

Before choosing a parcel

  1. Ask the owner before entering private land even when it is not posted, and confirm the route in, parking location, party size, and activities covered by that permission.
  2. Identify the Wildlife Management District for the parcel before reading species rules because district boundaries are a core part of Maine's hunt planning.
  3. Check the managing agency's page separately for a WMA, state park, or Public Reserved Land; stand, blind, vehicle, and controlled-hunt provisions are not uniform across those land classes.

Official links reviewed August 14, 2026. Agencies control current maps, seasons, permits, closures, and legal requirements; recheck them before every hunt.

WRITTEN PERMISSION

Written permission required in defined situations

Maine generally uses implied permission on unposted land, but posted or personally restricted access requires permission. Written permission is required for defined activities and locations, including much private-land trapping and placement of game or trail cameras; cameras must also carry owner name and contact labeling. Separate owner or authorized-occupant permission applies to firearm, muzzleloader, and archery discharge within 100 yards of covered buildings or dwellings.

Maine access questions

Can I request dates for Maine land today?

If a reviewed listing appears on this page, open it to send the owner a no-charge date request. If the reviewed rail reports zero, create a private request instead. Neither action grants access; the owner must approve the exact dates, party size, rules, and property terms.

Does a pass include my licenses or tags?

No. Private-property access is separate from licenses, permits, tags, draws, seasons, legal methods, and other requirements. Verify all current rules with the state wildlife agency.

Can I list land anywhere in Maine?

Yes. Landowners can submit a free, non-binding interest form from any county or area in the state.

Are hunting results guaranteed?

No. Back40 Pass can define access and property terms, but wildlife presence, harvest, weather, and hunting success can never be guaranteed.
