Know the request
Name the species, lawful method, date window, party, and exact area you want to discuss.
Private-land permission · Nationwide guide
Make it easy for a landowner to understand who, what, where, and when. Then confirm the boundary, rules, and every approval before anyone enters the property.
A request is not permission. Requirements vary by state, locality, property, activity, and posting status.
Before you contact an owner
Official wildlife agencies consistently emphasize asking early, identifying the exact use and people, respecting a refusal, and confirming boundaries and property-specific concerns.
Name the species, lawful method, date window, party, and exact area you want to discuss.
Contact the owner well before the hunt. Do not arrive armed, walk the parcel, scout, or use a road first.
A courteous “no” is a complete answer. Do not pressure the owner or treat silence as approval.
Permission can be limited or revoked. Reconfirm the people, dates, activities, map, and current rules.
There is no channel that every owner prefers. Introduce yourself before the trip, make the request specific, and leave room for a refusal.
| Contact | Suggested opening | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Resident owner | “I’m looking for permission for a specific hunt. Is this a convenient time to ask?” | Use an offered contact method. Keep a visit brief and respect signs or requests not to approach. |
| Owner living elsewhere | “I’m writing about access to your property near [area]. Do you handle these requests, or is there a manager?” | A short letter can give them time to consider it. A record-office address is only a starting point. |
| Business or manager | “Who is authorized to review a hunting-access request, and what is your application process?” | Use the published business channel. A staff member’s informal reply may not authorize access. |
Only need to cross the land? Choose passage-only in the builder. Describe entry, route, exit and destination. Discuss parking, vehicles and retrieval separately; access to a destination does not authorize crossing another parcel.
What the conversation must settle
A responsible request separates the hunter, activity, dates, and place. If the owner is willing to discuss access, turn the answer into a shared understanding before the first visit.
The person you contact must actually control the hunting rights. Co-owners, tenants, farm or timber leases, existing hunting leases, and property managers can affect who may authorize access. A map, neighbor, previous invitation, or website result cannot grant permission.
The builder above drafts the hunter's request. It is not a signed authorization. Some states and localities require a particular form or written record in specific circumstances; others strongly recommend written permission even when a particular property is not posted. Start with the current wildlife-agency resources for the state, then verify any county or municipal rule that applies.
Access to one parcel does not authorize entry onto another. Agree on a retrieval and contact procedure before the hunt, then stop at the boundary if game crosses onto land you are not authorized to enter.
Use the 50-state permission-requirements matrix to open the claim-mapped rules, form classification, and official sources reviewed for your state. The state hunting directory also connects to current maps, regulations, licenses, and access programs.

| Thank the owner, leave promptly, and do not ask for an explanation or enter the land. | Ask when and how to follow up. Do not scout or treat the conversation as provisional access. | Confirm authority, people, dates, boundary, rules, contacts, and the required written record. |
| Do not ask another household member to reverse the answer. | Offer a narrower request only if the owner invites alternatives. | Recheck before each visit and ask again for any new person, date, species, or activity. |
